Bulletin for the IV Sunday in Advent, December 24, 2023 9:00AM Service

Worship Helpers: Earl & Patricia Jones

God keeps the promise made to David to give him an everlasting throne. The angel tells Mary that God
will give David’s throne to her son Jesus. She is perplexed by Gabriel’s greeting and by the news of her
coming pregnancy, but she is able still to say, “Count me in.” We who know that Jesus is called king
only as he is executed still find it a mystery hard to fathom, but with Mary today we hear the news of
what God is up to and say, “Count us in.”
(*) Please stand as you are able
(-) Please be seated
The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.
P: Blessed be God, the eternal ☩ One-in-Three, who was, and is, and is to come.
C: Blessed be God forever and ever.
HH: Our world is not so different now from the world of Mary and Joseph.
C: We confess our fear, greed and self-centeredness that make us reluctant to work
against oppression.
HH: We forget how God loves justice and hates exploitation and our carelessness with creation’s bounty.
C: We long for the courage and will to walk in God’s ways for the sake of our hurting
and waiting world.
HH: Yet God is patient and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
C: Keep us awake to, help us to prepare for, and welcome the compassion of your Son
who continues to come into our world and our lives each day.
HH: Come, O Christ, and set us free.
C: Come, Emmanuel, bring in your reign of justice and peace.
HH: O God who lifts up the lowly and humbles the wealthy and proud, help us, like Mary, respond to your call to bear Christ’s love, grace, mercy and salvation as your servants. Help us to
join your mission for the sake of the world. Help us also to say, “Here am I, let it be with me
according to your word.” We pray in Jesus’ name.
C: Amen.

“GO AND…” – JANUARY-Rest At the start of the new year, we are pushed to get organized,
exercise more, and make New Year’s resolutions. How do we take rest among all this? What does
it mean to be like Jesus? It means taking time to pause, rest, and embrace the day. That might
mean taking a nap, getting together with old friends, reading a good book, or enjoying the arts as
we recognize God makes all things new.
Questions to consider: What brings you rest? What does Sabbath mean for you? What does it
look like in your life? Let GO, what are you going to give up this year so that you can rest?
Prayer: O God, you have called your servants to ventures of which we cannot see the ending, by paths as
yet untrodden, through perils and joys unknown. Give us faith to go out with good courage, not knowing
where we go, but only that your hand is leading us and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ our
Lord. Amen.
