-WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
-LITANY & LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH
P: Blessed be God, the eternal ☩ One-in-Three, who was, and is, and is to come.
C: Blessed be God forever and ever.
HH: In the Genesis story at the beginning of the Bible, we hear God create the world with God’s Word.
C: God said, “Let there be light.” God said, “Let the earth bring forth living creatures of
every kind.” God said, “It is good.”
HH: Then, in the first chapter of the Gospel of John, we hear how the Word, is God.
C: And, the Word became flesh! The Word became Jesus! God came into the world
HH: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the
beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came
into being. What has come into being in him was life,
C: and the life was the light of all people. (John 1:1-4)
HH: The true light, which helps everyone to see, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and
the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.
C: He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.
HH: But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,
who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.
C: And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory
as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. (John 1:9-14)

DWELLING IN THE STORY – GOD’S LOVE HAS COME DOWN FOR US
P: Come, holy people, called by God, let us follow the way prepared for us.
C: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to God’s people on earth.
A: Once again the world is surprised at a manger, as the glory and love of God comes in unexpected
C: Let us go to Bethlehem to see what God has made known to us.
P: There in Bethlehem and here today at St. John’s, we are reminded anew of the wonder of God’s love
C: Let us open our eyes, ears, hearts and minds to the grace and truth born for us – born
A: Let us pray… Amazing God, on that night so long ago, You gathered a group of unlikely outsiders—
Mary, Joseph, shepherds, and others to be part of a great miracle: the birth of Jesus, our Savior.
C: Today You have sought us out and brought us to the manger. You have interrupted
our routines with Your Good News. You have gathered this unlikely assortment of
folks to become a holy people, a community of faith. We want to respond. Show us
how. Help us receive and share your renewing love as we praise You for offering us
grace, mercy and salvation in Jesus Your Son, in whose name we pray. Amen.

DECEMBER-Be Present As we await and celebrate Christ’s birth, we remember that God is present and
shows up. The babe in the manger, God Incarnate, is God’s gift of deep love for us. We are invited to
pause, be still, and be fully present in this holy season. Society calls us to a different place where busyness, spending, and rushing about are marks of success. God, in Christ, offers another way: Emmanuel
– God with us.
Questions to consider: What can I add to this season that would truly allow me to pause? What tradition
do you have that nurtures being present at this time of year? As you are on the GO, how are you going
to practice being present?
Prayer: Emmanuel, you are present with us. Help us be present with each other. Amen.
