The Celebration and Commitments of Thanks~Giving
On this final Sunday of the church year our gospel is Jesus’ great story of judgment. In the end, the
faithful are those who served Christ by ministering to those who are poor, hungry, naked, sick, or estranged. In the first reading God is the shepherd who seeks the lost, weak, and injured and feeds them
with justice. We gather this day to celebrate the reign of Christ and his victory over death, yet we await
the consummation of all things yet to come. Acknowledging Christ as our merciful ruler, we go forth
that his reign may be known in our loving words and deeds. Our commitment to giving is one way we
act in love.
(*) Please stand as you are able
(-) Please be seated

The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

L: Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, in whose image we are made, who claims us and calls us
beloved. C: Amen.

Silence for reflection.
L: Holy One,
C: We confess that we are not awake for you. We are not faithful in using your gifts.
We forget the least of our siblings. We do not see your beautiful image in one another.
We are infected by sin that divides your beloved community. Open our hearts to your
coming, open our eyes to see you in our neighbor, open our hands to serve your creation. Amen.
L: Beloved, we are God’s children, and Jesus, our Beloved, opens the door to us. Through ☩ Jesus you
are forgiven, by Jesus you are welcome, in Jesus you are called to rejoice! Let us live in the promises
prepared for us from the foundation of the world. C: Amen.

*GATHERING SONG Christ is Alive! ELW 389

L: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with
you all.
C: And also with you.

*CANTICLE OF PRAISE This is the Feast ELW p. 187

L O God of power and might, your Son shows us the way of service, and in him we inherit the
riches of your grace. Give us the wisdom to know what is right and the strength to serve the
world you have made, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with
you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen.

The Offering is presented at the altar as the Offertory is sung and the Lord’s table is prepared.

-OFFERTORY We Are an Offering ELW 692

L God of all goodness, generations have turned to you, gathered around your table, and shared your
abundant blessings. Number us among them that, as we gather these gifts from your abundance,
and give thanks for your rich blessings, we may feast upon your very self and care for all that you
have made, through Jesus Christ, our Sovereign and Servant.
C: Amen

God feeds us with the presence of Jesus Christ.

P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you.
P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord.
P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. C: It is right to give our thanks and praise.
P: It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,…and join their unending hymn:

L Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us.
C Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on
earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we
forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from
evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

+As you return to your seat after receiving communion or a blessing, place your commitment card and/or Time & Talent sheet in the baskets.
(We invite you to come forward down the center aisle starting with the back pews. When you reach the
front, hold out your hands if you would like to receive communion, or hold your arms across your chest
to receive a blessing. If children receive communion in their home congregation, they are welcome to
receive communion at St. John’s. Just say, “Gluten free” if you would like gluten free wafers. There are
cups with red wine and white grape juice in the trays. Let us know if you’d like communion brought to
you in the pew. All are welcome at Christ’s table!)

“GO AND…” – Ready, Set, Go! In the Great Commission, Jesus calls us to GO. We are taking
those words to heart. We invite you to be part of this call to GO!
NOVEMBER – Be Present As we await and celebrate Christ’s birth, we remember that God is
present and shows up. The babe in the manger, God Incarnate, is God’s gift of deep love for us.
We are invited to pause, be still, and be fully present in this holy season. Society calls us to a different place where busyness, spending, and rushing about are marks of success. God, in Christ,
offers another way: Emmanuel – God with us.
Questions to consider: What can I add to this season that would truly allow me to pause? What
tradition do you have that nurtures being present at this time of year? As you are on the GO, how
are you going to practice being present?
Prayer: Emmanuel, you are present with us. Help us be present with each other. Amen.
